The Cheating Society and the Cheating Archives

I have been involved in so many discussions on poker tournament cheating in the 2+2 forums (mainly on MTT). Some of the discussions have been really amusing, legendary, but most of them are just sad. I have always cared about the integrity of the game, but it's just too hard when so many of the top tournament players condone, endorse or just don't care about these cheating issues. I almost give up, I don't post anymore on the MTT forum on 2+2, mainly because I'm pretty disappointed with the reaction of the regulars toward this issue; same reason I just didn't post any more since long time ago on the Pocket Fives forums, back then, looked like 2+2 people used to care and condemn these practices, not anymore, so many cheating scandals. But why the young poker studs would be any different living on this pro-cheating society with all the sports, politics, corporation scandals, where it does not matter how you succeed, whatever it takes, looks like the path is not important anymore, no matter how many rules you broke, the important (and cool) thing is to get the money, fame, power. Sometimes playing poker I just feel like all those MLB players who work their ass to compete, but in reality will never have a chance with equally talented but steroid enhanced players. Hey, but we still make good money to have a decent living.

Just in case you have some hundreds of hours to kill, here are some of the legendary threads on this topic for your amusement:

Teasing early this week

Today we have a NFL game, Denver-Houston, and the line moved today so HOU became a good teaser team, so I decided to act fast and have the following teams on teasers:
HOU +8.5
CIN -2.5
GB -2.5
SEA -1
Seattle is not a teasing team yet, but I think the line will move to -7.5, so I decided to take the better line now.

Hedging on those mediocre Ravens

Just when I was about to give up on my NFL bets (yeah right), I decided to tease again this Sunday MIN,TEN,IND,HOU,SEA and DEN. All my teasers covered and I won like 26 bets (26-0) and I recovered all the loses from previous weeks and win some. The Indy game was Sunday night, so about 11 of my teasers were depending on IND -2.5, that is, I could finish 15-11 or 26-0. I decided against my gambling nature and decided to hedge the game betting BAL +10, so if Indy didn't cover, at least I would win some with the Baltimore bet, but if Indy cover by 10+, I lost the amount I bet on Baltimore and win the 11 teasers, and I could still win both bets (teasers and BAL+10), if Indy win by 3-9 points; basically I wanted to reduce variance, since the jump from 15-11 to 26-0 was pretty steep. Well, Indy won by 24 points and it was really painful to watch those mediocre Ravens, instead of feeling like a responsible gambling guy by minimizing variance and assuring a good profit, I felt like I just wasted that money I bet on the Ravens, I waited until the last minute before kickoff to make the bet, I just wanted to let it ride my IND -2.5, but decided to assure a good profit, not a bad move at all, but I feel cheated by those Ravens, I mean, I don't care if they win or lose, but I do care if they DON'T PLAY. How the hell a Pro Sports team can play so differently from one week (versus the Patriots) to the next (versus the Colts). The answer is mediocrity, I already have them pegged as mediocre because they played so good versus the Patriots (why don't they play like that every week?), and the mediocrity level was just confirmed with their terrible performance versus the Indy Colts at Baltimore. No heart at all, no desire to win, no respect for the fans, nothing, man, these are pro athletes, maybe too much money may them forget what is to play your heart out EVERY WEEK, no matter who are you playing, no matter your position, always play to win.
Despite those Ravens, it was a wonderful weekend on Sports Betting coming back to the good side of variance.

First hand, I had the stack and I like to play from behind with a hand like KdJd, flop came perfect (little cards with 2 diamonds), unfortunately for me he had JJ, but still was a 46% to win after the flop, no king or diamond to save me.

Last hand, folded to me with AT in the SB, which was perfect because now if I went all in, he could call with Ax or any broadway hand thinking I wanted to buy the pot, my wishes were granted and he called with A8, but I lost the 72%.

So close ...... AGAIN

Since I'm being killed with my NFL teasers and some other sports bets, I decided to come back to the tourney variance !!!, such a ridiculous life we gamblers live, winning and losing big amounts of money (and some sense of reality); so, since the dark side of variance came back in sports, I decided to play some tourneys, after the $300 I played on November 28th, I decided to play this past Sunday all the big ones, I couldn't, I just played a $55 satellite, lost with a full house and got all mad, and decided to watch my loved NFL games instead.
Yesterday the PATS (aka the best football team ever) made me lose some more teasers I had with them and I got all mad and decided to play today some tourneys. Today (Tuesday) I played a $100, and the 2 big ones on PokerStars, the $150+12 and the $1000 Super Tuesday, I lost fast in the $100 and did pretty well in the other two, this is if the definition of doing well it's getting to the final 2 tables on both. I got 16th out of 313 in the $1000, and 15th out of 912 in the $150, my total winnings for such feat, just $3,686 !!, so close to the big money, once again, once again, yadayada ... I think I played pretty well on both, got lucky on the $150 and got unlucky on the $1000 (1st prize was 70K).
If I'm not mad by tomorrow I'll post some hands, the usual final hand badbeat ones, and some others with actual poker content. Meh, who am I kidding? Most probably I won't post nada, but it's nice to think I will do it.

Teasing these teams

I'm doing completely all 2,3,4 with BUF,SEA,GB,SD,DEN y HOU. Also doing some PIT.

Too many bets, and the problem is I have too many road teams, but I couldn't help it. Go teasers !!!!

And I couldn't bring myself to bet the Patriots, but I'm really excited for the Patriots-Colts game.

Lots of teasers, no tourneys at all and some cash games

This week I think I'm going to bet too many teasers on the NFL games, probably more than 40 bets, I know there are too many, but I think they have an edge and well, sports betting is all about finding a little edge here and there.

I haven't played a tourney probably since the Main Event of the WCOOP, really I don't even remember the last one I played, but I'm playing some cash games, I wouldn't say in a regular basis, but I put some hours some days of the week, I play 2-4,3-6 and 5-10 No Limit 6-handed, I'm doing well, probably variance is on my side, but I feel pretty comfortable with my 6-handed game. I just need to put more hours, so I can be rich, but I'm pretty lazy, well I guess it's more about lack of focus than laziness, I can't just concentrate for long periods.

I'm also solving a lot of Math Olympiad problems these days, I love them and I have always liked a good Math challenge.

Probably I'll post the teams I'm teasing this week, hopefully I won't lose my sports betting bankroll this week.

I love Teasers !!! what a NFL weekend

This weekend I had an all time high of 27 NFL bets. I won 26, pushed 1 and 0 loses !!!! Just incredible, I used the following teams to do the teasers NYG,DAL,HOU,KC,NO,TB,SEA and all of them covered !!!, the only team I was going to use but did not like the line was WAS, the line was -8.5(-2.5 with the tease), so I didn't bet it; at the end it was a good (lucky?) decision, since Washington won 21-19 and didn't cover the -2.5. I do bet one WAS -8(-2) line just like one minute before kick off (my wake up time)and that was my only push.
I feel pretty proud because I almost didn't bet any game since I was pretty tired on Saturday night, Sunday morning, but even I was pretty sleepy, I went to my computer like at Sunday 5AM and did my homework and bet all the games I thought there was a mathematical edge. It worked and I felt proud of my professional gambling responsibility (whatever that means).
There were 2 incredible games where unlikely things happened at the end just to help me cover, the Tampa Bay and the Houston game. After the 3rd quarter, I thought I had already lost the HOU game and all my HOU teasers since the score was 32-7, but with an unbelievable 4th quarter, HOU scored 29 points just to help me cover :), they lost at the end 38-36 with a NFL all time record 8th field goal by Rob Bironas of Tennessee, but since I had HOU+7.5 I was pretty happy, such an unbelievable game. Since it's pretty unlikely I'll win these many bets without losing one in the future in a given day, I just feel the need to post all the bets:

Monterrey !! Congreso SMM

Cash sessions and a good sports betting month

Cleveland won again and won the series against the Yankees, also since I have Cleveland and Boston, I already secured a good profit in the AL Pennant, just with Cleveland alone almost erase my loses on a 10-20 NL terrible session I had (-2 buy ins), one night I just couldn't sleep and decided to play 10-20 NL (??) for the first time, what a time to start, I couldn't sleep but I was tired for sure, and decided to gamble high stakes !!!! (and yes it was a dumb gamble) and of course I got killed since I'm not in that level yet, but thanks to Cleveland and winning all my sessions after that in lower limits from 2-4 to 5-10 NL, that night has been forgotten.
I'm leaving town today, heading to Monterrey, I'm going to the meeting of the Mexican Mathematical Society at the UANL, I'll give a talk there (program 35:10) about how to beat the odds and showing some examples using mathematics in poker and gambling in general. I have several good examples and I really expect the talk to be successful and I'm pretty sure plenty of people will attend, since gambling (and how to make some money of it) is not a topic well known in Mexico and I'm sure it will generate some interest, hopefully my ideas will be clear and everybody who attends will enjoy it.

Cleveland !!

I won good money betting Cleveland on games 1 and 2 versus the Yankees, didn't bet game 3 and the Yankees won, I was not going to bet game 4, since Yankees are in a must-win situation playing in New York, Wang is a much better pitcher than Paul Byrd, but the price was just too good to pass, Cleveland +222, I could not resist it and bet the tribe, go Indians !!

Some baseball bets

Last week was a very good one for me on Sports Betting, lets see how this one goes,

For today games I have the following:

CHI (Lilly) at ARI (Davis); I have CHI -122
NYY (Wang) at CLE (Sabathia); I have CLE +118 (3 units)
COL (Morales) at PHI (Kendrick); I have PHI -138

I also bought some Boston (35) and Cleveland (22) to win the AL Pennant

My Fantasy Baseball season

I'm really proud of this league (I'm Resurgam Hicetnunc), I just destroyed the competition, it's just amazing winning 7 out of 10 categories in a 12 owner Rotisserie Fantasy Baseball League. Damn, I owned these guys :)

This year I played 2 Fantasy baseball leagues with the following results, 1 out of 12 (4 paid) and 4 out of 13 (5 paid). So, with my 2006 fantasy league I'm now 3 for 3 on fantasy baseball cashes. This is the breakout of the money won this year:

1st place F2: +$1200
4th place F1: +$200
Fees F2: -$250
Fees F1: -$200
Sidebets F1: -$400
Sidebets F2: +$400

So I won $950 for my fantasy baseball addiction.

WCOOP Main Event

I'm too tired to post now, but let me tell you I played yesterday like 12 hours straight and got 111th place (out of 2998) in the $2,600 Main event of the WCOOP, I won $11,242.50 for my efforts. It is such a ridiculous tourney, 1st place was a whopping $1,378,330.50; damn !!!, more than a million dollars in an internet poker tournament, just amazing. As I'm typing this, the tournament is still running !!!!, as you can see in the picture above, running for almost 21 hours !!!! just wow, such an amazing tournament, I think I played pretty well and make some tough decisions, and some good creative plays that worked, and in general I'm happy with my result. I almost don't play it, but some internet friends convinced me to do it by buying whatever action I was willing to sell. I cashed 2 times in the WCOOP (out of 11,12?), but by far, the Main Event was my best tournament, the one I feel the most relaxed and happy with my decisions.

Here are the payouts:

Cashes have come back and I'm playing !!, plus a hand and a dry pot

I played 4 tournaments this Sunday and cashed in 2 of them (a $200 and a $100), even the $200 was a little disappointing, I finished 63 out of more than 2000, I'm happy, not for the cashes but because I'm playing more and more and that's good. There were many interesting hands yesterday, one I remember from the $100+9 was the following:

We were already in the money with 4 tables left:

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t1000 (9 handed)

saw flop|saw showdown

BB (t27883)
UTG (t3198)
UTG+1 (t10865)
MP1 (t42597)
MP2 (t36125)
MP3 (t11358)
CO (t16250)
Button (t25556)
SB (t23607)

Preflop: Hero is SB with Ks, 5s.

UTG raises to t3098, 5 folds, Button calls t3098, Hero calls t2598, BB calls t2098.

Maybe the call was in the loose side, but I did it because of the all in guy, we have a good dry pot and usually this means people let you see more cards while you don't let them if you hit or think you can beat the all in guy, in this case I have to hit

Flop: (t11692) Kh, 8c, 7s (4 players)

Ok, I hit and I'm first to act with 2 guys in the pot besides the AI guy, I decided to bet to isolate, but I thought a small bet was enough to get rid of players with an ace or an small pair, and if I encounter any resistance (a raise) I just fold, since usually a raise in a dry pot situation means a hand

SB bets t3000, BB raises to t24685, Button folds, Hero folds.

BB went AI after my bet, he had been playing pretty tight up to that point, I was prepared to fold but still took a moment to think about the chance he had something like A8 and wanted to really isolate, based on his play before and the fact that he was doing that versus a bet and a guy still to act made me fold

Turn: (t39377) Tc (2 players)
River: (t39377) 8s (2 players)

Final Pot: t17692
Main Pot: t17692 (t17692), returned to BB.

Results in white below:

BB has 9c Th (two pair, tens and eights).
UTG has Js Ah (one pair, eights).
Outcome: BB wins t17692.

I was debating the BB play with a friend and I think the fold was the correct play here and I don't like much BB's play (even it worked for him, THIS time). What do you think?

AK and a short-medium stack

Another mistake I think I use to make a lot, it's when I have AK, let's say on MP with a 10-17x stack, the stack may be too big to go all in, but if I make the usual raise to 3x and got called by somebody on the button for example. I have a hard time playing the flop, the pot has about 8x and you have 7x-14x left. Lets say 3 rags come, my mistake is I go all in a little too much in this situation just to be called by any pair, so, there must be a better way to play the AK here, shove preflop?, check-fold flop, mini-scare bet flop?, and of course I'm assuming you know nothing about your opponent.
What to do?, please do tell me, I play very bad the AK missed flop, I should say in general, but specially when I don't have a big stack.

- We want to live near a big metropolitan area (this is not in the middle of Nebraska)

- We prefer a multi-ethnic city (like Toronto)

- We want a good educational system for the kids

- We prefer a progressive city, but still family oriented (Is that possible?), we have liberal views on general, but we really value a community where family values are important.

- We prefer US cities, but maybe Canada is ok; Europe a distant possibility

- Too hot (temperature) is bad, so 100+ cities (Phoenix?) are not eligible; near water is better (lake, river or sea), near forest is also good

- Not outrageously expensive cost of living cities is better, higher than average is ok

- Plenty of parks and museums please

- Cities not hated by mother Nature

- Cities whose citizens are very respectful of the law

- Professional Sports team is a plus :)

El plan es algo aventurado, pero ojala y lo podamos llevar a cabo, eso es uno de los beneficios de ser un jugador profesional de poker online, que puedes vivir literalmente donde tu prefieras.

One of my biggest leaks: how to play TPNK

Top pair no kicker, I just suck at making decisions with this hand. This was my last hand on the Poker Stars Sunday Million $500+30

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t300 (9 handed)

saw flop|saw showdown

BB (t9125)

UTG (t10250)

UTG+1 (t13975)

MP1 (t11575)

MP2 (t12253)

MP3 (t16997)

CO (t13275)

Button (t12650)

SB (t6875)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 4h, Qh.

2 folds, MP1 calls t300, MP2 calls t300, 3 folds, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: (t1200) Qc, 5d, 6c (4 players)

Hero checks, BB checks, MP1 checks, MP2 bets t900, Hero calls t900, BB folds, MP1 folds.

Turn: (t3000) 2h (2 players)

Hero checks, MP2 bets t2100, SB raises to t5675, MP2 calls t3575.

River: (t14350) 7c (2 players)

Final Pot: t14350

Main Pot: t14350 (t14350), between MP2 and Hero. > Pot won by MP2 (t14350).

Results in white below:

Hero has 4h Qh (one pair, queens).

MP2 has Td Qd (one pair, queens).

Outcome: MP2 wins t14350.

My Analysis:

Preflop: Completing the SB was fine with 2 callers

Flop: It is the first puzzle, Do you check-fold any time you flop TPNK on a multiway pot?, if MP1 or MP2 bet, I most probably fold, but since the bet came from the last person to act, my hand may be good, therefore the call; Is a check-raise better? Is leading better?, because of the size of my stack, Is it the check-raise all in better if I'm not folding?, IS the call better and then shove any turn?

Turn: I think it was a total mistake, if I'm going all in, it's better to just lead all in, instead of check raising without any fold equity. He'd probably called anyway.

Meh, I should just fold the flop all the time until I learn how to play TPNK.

I went 0 for 6 this Sunday, I feel a little rusty, but the good thing is I'm playing.

Folding KK preflop: Almost

The hand was from a $20 Re-buy tournament this Saturday on the second hour. blinds were 75-150 I think, MP raised to 399 or something like that (his stack was 30K), I reraise in MP+2 to 1500 with KK, and then the button went all in for 8k, wow, my stack was 12K, back to MP and he went AI instantly for 30K. Yikes (Demontres !!); i took all the time I could, taught button had JJ-QQ or AA, and probably the MP wanted to isolate with something like AK, but the weird first raise may me consider AA. Wow, what to do, I just couldn't fold the KK in a $20 rebuy tournament (even we were on the second hour) and called, MP had AA, button had JJ and that was it, but I almost folded !!!, pretty hard, but sometimes you just have to do it. The only thing for me was AK for MP trying to isolate button thinking I had QQ, but it was just too risky and I had a big stack. What do you think? Do you fold?

AI vs Standard raise with 22 and a short stack

Calling AI preflop with AQ in the WSOP $1500 NL

On this hand I had between 90k and 100k, blinds were 1500-3000, don't remember the ante. A young player with a big stack (around 180k) was moved to my right just a while ago, and as soon as he sat down he tried to control the table with his stack. On my first hand with him, folded to him in the SB, he raises, and I went AI without hesitation in the BB, with AK or a medium pair, don't remember, he folded. There were about 120 players left I think (out of the original 2778), when the hand came up, he was in the CO and made a weird raise to 7600, I had AQ on the button, and was pondering if I called or raised, I decide to go for the raise and make it 22,500; folded to him, and he starts counting his chips, staring at me, I thought he was folding but after a while he declared all in, I think that was his mistake, to take that much time to go all in, if I called I have to call AI of course since he covered me, and I'm never happy to call all ins with AQ, if I folded I still had around 70k, which it was decent, but this time 2 things didn't add up, his raise preflop (for his type of player) and the time he took to go all in, those 2 things told me (or made me think) that he didn't have a big hand, no AA-JJ, not even AK, the better hand he could have for me was a medium pair, but it was possible he was bluffing at all, given his type, the young internet aggressive players of nowadays. I studied him for a while and decided to went with my read and called, he said good call and he flipped QJo, perfect for me to have him in a dominated position, but of course I still had to dodge the board, no bad beat this time and I went to 200k and to be one of the chip leaders at the time.

My 2 most important calls in the WSOP NLH #1500

There were many key hands in that tourney, obviously there should be, if you're going to navigate through 2800 players. 2 of the most important ones were 2 difficult calls I made after analyzing the logic of the plays and my opponents for a while.
I'll try to remember the details as accurate as I can.

With blinds 500-1000-100 I was in the SB with a 43k stack, a lady in her 40's kind of new to the table was in the big blind with around 31k. I had been fairly active on the table. Folded to me in the SB, I saw 32o, of course with such a monster I called and she checked.

Flop came Qh5d2h and I proceeded to bet 2000, she called. Mmmmmm, in my mind she have a flush draw or a pair.

Turn came 7h completing the flush, I decided to represent the flush myself and fired 6000, she called. Now I am done, or am I?

River is the 8h, putting 4 hearts in the board, I kind of remember I have one heart, but I checked, now she went all in 22k instantly, what the fuck?

I checked my cards and effectively I had the 3h, and now I proceeded to analyze the evidence and stare at her once in a while, I was on seat 10 she was at seat 1. For some reason her instant all in bet just didn't add up, and the more I stared at her, the more she looked nervous, but what kind of nervous, maybe Qc6h nervous?, nah, after a while I counted my chip to notice I would have only around 13k if I called and lost and based on my read she didn't want me to call the more time it passed, I said call, she flipped Qc8c for 2 pairs ?? Was she valuebetting?; since I covered her, she excited and I rake a nice pot with my 3 high flush.

Next: My big call preflop with AQ

My last hand in the Main Event

I fought very hard on day 2 with my short stack, and was getting away with it since I had a very good table. I made some good plays without too much of a hand to keep my stack with a size that allowed me to go all in (with a raise or reraise) and still be a threat to the other players. Then the following hand came:

The table has been limpimg a lot, which was very good for me and my stack, this time it was no different, 4 limpers, including Chuck Kelley in the button with a +200k stack; by the way, his game had not impressed me so far, since I saw him making some obvious mistakes and since I had position over him, he was at seat 1, I was on seat 3, I was hoping those chips came my way, but of course I needed to be lucky first and double up, the opportunity came in this hand, after he limped, I found AK in the SB, blinds were 600-1200-200 at the time, so 3600 to start, and with 4 limpers, 4800 more, perfect situation for my 22k stack, of course I went all in, waiting to take the 8400 unless somebody had a real hand, since calling 20k more it would be difficult for all of them but Chuck, and even if he called, I didn't mind to race with AK, but I was not expecting him to call anyway, since he didn't raise the limpers, but maybe he had a small pair and decided I was making too many "moves". Well, he called the 20k more and now the pot had near 50k, I was expecting to see something like 22-66 and race for the chips, but no, the donkey had KTo !!!; I couldn't believe it, but of course I was really happy, couldn't expect a better situation to put all my chips in the center, I was already thinking about my new stack and how to control the table. Well, this is until a ten hit the turn, no help in the river and that was my main event; table feeling sad for me with the usual good game and you played that short stack pretty well, I just smiled, wish everybody luck and exited, beginning the wait for 2008. Incredible, this was my only all in all the tourney, that is, the only one that was called. The round before I was almost called, when again some limpers, I completed in the SB with 53o, flop came 743, I checked and it was checked around (such a nice table), 7 in the turn and I was going to bet some but I better went all in, a guy with a 100k or something stack, thought for a while while asking me if I had the 7 before folding his pair, I wonder which pair it was, 66?, maybe A4?, but of course I was glad he folded. Maybe Chuck saw this and decided to teach me a lesson with his powerful KT, but that's poker and you need to win these "flips" in order to advance. For example, one of the most important hands I had in the $1500 event was a sick call I made with AQ when I had like 90k versus a bully who went AI (after my reraise) with QJ and his 170k stack (and blinds were like 1k-2k !!), but of course that time I won and could use my stack to almost make the final table. Exiting the Main Event is always a sad day, I just can't help it, it's such an experience to us poker players to play in it. I'm pretty sure I'll be there once again in 2008.

The night before Day 2-B

I finished Sunday with a short stack with respect to the field, I have 21,200. Blinds tomorrow Wednesday will be 500-1000-100, I'm short but not desperate. I'll be playing on table 30, looks like I draw a good table since I don't recognize the names, with the exception of the table chip leader Chuck Kelley, who got a 2nd place in a WPT last January.
I feel good and hopefully my plan for tomorrow will work and with some luck, I could make it to day 3.

Dinner break

We're at dinner break at the moment. Play resumes at 8:30 PM PST, I have around 42k chips, we started with 20k. I have a good table and hopefully things continue to go well. I'm at table 35 seat 9.

Flying to the Big Dance

I'm here at El Paso airport, waiting for my Southwest flight to Vegas, I just booked it yesterday along with my hotel room and a car rental (so I don't have to walk under the 115 degrees sun). The main event is already under way, many people was already eliminated yesterday on Day 1A, I'm starting tomorrow on Day 1C and as usual, I'm pretty excited, playing the Main Event is a great adventure, no matter the result. Hopefully I'll post some interesting things from Vegas and from the tournament, but as usual just wishful thinking, I'm a terrible blogger. I have so many interesting hands from my cash in the $1500 NL, I played there more than 24 hours and there were some amazing hands, material enough to fill at least this blog for a week. I haven't played barely any poker since that tourney, I've played some online 5-10 NL 6-handed hands, but that's about it. Still I feel pretty good and in the mood to have a good tourney.

P.S. I'm already missing my family, it's weird to travel without them.

Going to the WSOP Main Event

I decided to play the Main Event, last week I walked to the Rio's cashier with 2 purple 5k chips and paid my registration. I chose day 1C, so I will be starting Sunday July 8th. Last week I went to Vegas to play just 3 events in the WSOP. I cashed in one of them, event#38 $1,500 No Limit Holdem, I placed 14th out of 2778, good to win around $30,000; so I decided that was my "satellite" to the Main Event and decided to use $10,000 to play it.

This will be my 5th main event, despite my 8 for 25 in cashes in the WSOP, which I think it's pretty respectable; I'm 0 for 4 in the Main Event, hopefully that changes this year. I feel good and I will be leaving for Vegas next Friday. May the poker Gods be with me.

Stacking

Well, I'll post at least a hand a day, that's easy.

This is one from my 5-10 NL 6-max play. It shows basically the most usual mistake of a cash game NL player, that is, playing all your stack with just top pair.

Full Tilt Poker
No Limit Holdem Ring game
Blinds: $5/$10
5 players

Stack sizes:
UTG: $1272.95
Hero: $1188
Button: $1003
SB: $2373
BB: $1354.30

Pre-flop: (5 players) Hero is CO with K♥ K♠
UTG raises to $35, Hero calls, Button calls, SB folds, BB calls.

Flop: K♦ A♥ 9♠ ($145, 4 players)
BB checks, UTG bets $145, Hero calls, 2 folds.

Turn: 4♥ ($435, 2 players)
UTG bets $300, Hero raises all-in $1008, UTG calls.

River: Q♠ ($2451, 1 player + 1 all-in - Main pot: $2451)

Results:
Final pot: $2451
UTG showed Qc Ad
Hero showed Kh Ks

Hopefully I keep stacking people in the 5-10 game, so I can play some WSOP events.

Monday tourneys

I played 2 tourneys on Monday, none on Sunday, my first 2 since May 10. I keep getting deep in the tourneys, but not deep enough. I was 17th out of 413 on the Full Tilt $163 for $434 and 19th out of 1069 on the Stars $162 for $673. Of course pretty disappointing as usual. I think I made some mistakes in the Full Tilt one, especially a bluff going wrong that crippled me. In the Stars one, I'm not sure about my last decision of going all in from the BB with A7h when the button raised to 18k, I have only like 43k and was the short stack at the time, I don't have too much fold equity there and besides that the jump between 19th and 18th was $500 (but of course 1st place was $33,000); but I figured he was stealing and to have the best hand, unfortunately he had 99 and no ace or hearts came to rescue me. The important thing is despite almost not playing tourneys I keep getting deep on them. After that I played a little 5-10 NL and I won like $100. Sunday and Monday were pretty good for my sports bets, I won around $2000, hopefully the streak continues and I can get even on Sports.

My adventures as a sports bettor

So far they have been terrible, I started late last year and kind of seriously in February, and not counting Movie bets, I'm losing around 7k betting NBA, NCAA basketball, MLB, MMA, Box, well, almost everything. And I can't say I have been lazy, I've worked my ass trying to learn, reading books and all over the internet, comparing lines, shopping, finding arbitrages, everything, but it's just too hard. I'm about to give up on Sports, the only thing I've beaten so far is movie awards, I won around 6.5k between the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Basically I have won in the only events I have a good amount of knowledge. Following people with "knowledge" on other areas has been a disaster so far. So, until I have an amount of knowledge of baseball, basketball, MMA fighting and other sports at least comparable to my movie awards, I would be better off not betting at all. But I can't help it for now, I love sports and it's so much fun !!
